Problem to be solved: To isolate a beneficial novel compound contained in watershield (Brasenia schreberi), and provide a skin-beautifying agent or similar in which the compound is contained.
Solution: Methods such as a heat extraction method, in which Brasenia schreberi is added to a solvent (such as ethanol) and the resulting mixture is heated to a level that does not deactivate the active ingredient contained in the extract, or a supercritical extraction method, can be applied as appropriate. In addition, various known extraction methods are applicable, such as the immersion extraction method, in which the bark of Brasenia schreberi is immersed in a fixed amount of solvent and processed in batches, or the continuous extraction method, in which the solvent is continuously introduced. It is possible to isolate the active fraction from the extraction liquid obtained. Further, where necessary, appropriate methods of separation and purification, such as alumina column chromatography, silica gel chromatography, gel filtration chromatography, ion exchange chromatography, hydrophobic chromatography, and high performance liquid chromatography, are used in combination for refinement to obtain 3-O-(6""-O-E-caffeoyl)-b-D-glucopyranoside.
