Solution: The technical features of the invention designed to solve the above problem are as follows:
(1) A promoter of serine palmitoyltransferase gene expression containing β-sitosterol glycoside as an active component.
(2) A promoter of glucosylceramide synthase gene expression containing β-sitosterol glycoside as an active component.
(3) An inhibitor of sphingomyelin synthase gene expression containing β-sitosterol glycoside as an active component.
(4) The β-sitosterol glycoside is one of the β-sitosterol glycoside agents described in (1) to (3) above.
(5) An agent for improving skin barrier function containing any of the agents described in (1) to (4) above as an active component.
(6) An agent for improving moisture function containing any of the agents described in (1) to (4) above as an active component.
(7) An agent for ameliorating atopic dermatitis containing any of the agents described in (1) to (4) above as an active component.
