Oryza’s Rice Bran Oil Business
Story
Among Oryza Oil & Fat Chemical’s businesses, the rice bran oil business is the most historic,
consistently spanning more than 80 years since the company’s founding, and it is a business that
can be called Oryza Oil & Fat Chemical itself. We have based our operations on the principle of
realizing the people of the world’s health, happiness, and hope through the promotion of health
by utilizing the power of nature, and even as times change, we have continued to meet the
ever-changing needs of our customers.
Now more than ever, the words “sustainable,” “innovation,” and “global” ring loudly. Since we
have taken the initiative since our inception with these words as second nature, the rice bran
oil business has become the fruit of our identity, built by Oryza Spirits.

This is Oryza’s Rice Bran Oil Business.

(1)-1: Obtained Patents Worldwide for Sustainable Oil Extraction Method NEM (New Extraction Method)
Rice bran oil is made from rice bran, the by-product of the food staple rice. It can be said
that, compared to other edible plant oils and fats, which are made by making forests and
fields an oil crop, rice bran oil is a sustainable oil that is environmentally friendly to
the Earth, since it puts less of a load on the environment.
The benefits rice bran oil contributes to the world’s environment are immeasurable. It
contributes to biodiversity and the conservation of the landscape through the preservation
of the rice paddy. It also helps to counteract global warming by maintaining water
resources.
However, we would not be Oryza Oil & Fat Chemical if we were satisfied with only that. Since
the company was founded, we have pursued more ecological and high-quality ways to produce
rice bran oil. We continued to develop technologies and succeeded in developing the low
temperature extraction method (NEM) in 1976, for which we have obtained patents worldwide in
1982.
Low Temperature Extraction Method (NEM)
A method for extracting oil at an ultra-low temperature.
Since the oil is extracted at a low temperature, there are many benefits (see the table
below).
Low Temperature Extraction Method (NEM)
How NEM Differs from Traditional Methods
Traditional Methods | NEM Method | |
---|---|---|
Thermal degradation / coloring of extracted Ingredients | High | Low |
Thermal degradation / coloring of extracted Ingredients | High | Low |
After-process labor savings | Low | High |
Energy conservation | Low | High |
CO2/pollution generation | High | Low |

Comparison between NEM (New Extraction Method) and Traditional Methods

(1)-2: Superior Ecological Refining Technique NRM
The development of the world’s one and only NEM (New Extraction Method) also leads to a
superior technological development in the after process.
In 1980, we developed the distillation deoxidation method (New Refining Method), which
refines the crude oil in a very high vacuum environment. Compared to traditional chemical
refinement, it has significantly reduced the usage of processing aids, which were needed to
remove fatty acids. It has allowed higher concentrations of bioactive components and
gamma-oryzanol specific to the rice bran oil to remain, and has allowed for safe and high
added value production.

"Oryza Oil & Fat Chemical Does What Others in Japan and Overseas Don’t! The World Leader in Rice-Derived Functional Material Lineup"
Making active use of and adding value to unutilized resources normally scrapped is Oryza Oil & Fat Chemical at its best. Our manufacturing process of rice bran oil is not an exception.
Various by-products generated during the rice bran oil manufacturing process contain various functional components such as gamma-oryzanol, ceramide, ferulic acid, Gaba, and tocotrienol. Through technological capabilities that other companies can’t imitate, high-level active use is made of these functional components, and they are connected with high added value production to create numerous lineups of products unlike any other in the world.

Numerous Technological Provisions for Overseas Rice Bran Oil Manufacturers / Creation of a Global Network
Dewaxing equipment was developed based on our many years of experience and proven results. It is environmentally-friendly equipment that consumes less electricity.
※ Super Filter
We have exported a plant using the aforementioned NEM method, Super Filter*, and other equipment and have made technological provisions of, for example, methods including the high added value rice bran oil manufacturing methods. Furthermore, we have built a relationship of trust with overseas rice bran oil manufacturers and have worked with them for many years.

Quickly Became Halal Certified in the Industry and Began Selling Rice Bran Oil
In order to strive for the realization of the health, happiness, and hope of the people of the world, we were the first in the rice bran oil industry to begin selling rice bran oil products with the Halal Certification marking in 2014.

A Track Record of Cooperating with Numerous Academic Institutions Regarding Rice Bran Oil
We have a track record of conducting research jointly with numerous academic institutions in Japan and abroad. We continue our research relentlessly, day-in-day-out, to further be able to use rice bran oil effectively.

We attended the International Conference on Rice Bran Oil held every other year, which discusses rice bran oil and rice-derived functional components. In 2017 and 2018, we participated as a sponsor company.
